Every year, lakhs of aspirants seek admission to b-schools all around the world. The b-school admission committees consider GMAT exam scores as one of the factors to compare your skills that are required to pursue an MBA. However, over the years, b-schools started accepting GRE scores as well. But, since GMAT has an established history of being one of the most effective parameters for the admissions to MBA courses,, most schools compare the GRE score of applicants with the GMAT scores of the majority of applicants. The exact conversion of GRE to GMAT won’t be ideal as both are two different exams. However, there are some tools and conversion charts for the same. Read on to find out what they are.
GRE to GMAT Conversion
GMAT or the Graduate Management Admission Test is a global level computer-adaptive entrance exam, considered as a requirement for admission to business schools in India and abroad. On the other hand, the Graduate Records Examination or GRE is an entrance test that is used for admissions to any Masters Degree or Ph.D. in colleges around the world.
Both the tests measure your Quantitative and Verbal Reasoning skills as well as logical ability mainly. The total score of GMAT is calculated on a scale of 200-800, whereas the cumulative score range of GRE is 260-340. Though both the tests ask questions from similar topics, both the tests have a lot of differences, and hence we can’t exactly convert one score to another.
However, the Educational Testing Services (ETS) — the administering body of GRE — has introduced a GMAT to GRE conversion tool to help the b-schools to predict the possible GMAT equivalent using the available GRE Quantitative reasoning and Verbal Reasoning scores. The tool is available on the ETS official website. To access the score conversion tool, you have to go to the score interpretation resources page on the website. There you’ll find a business comparison tool, where you have to fill in your GRE Quant and Verbal scores respectively in the boxes provided there. It is much easier to do the score conversion if you do it section by section.
Apart from the official ETS tool, a lot of websites and coaching centers provide conversion charts that will help you compare your GRE score with possible GMAT score. However, none of these GRE GMAT charts are 100% accurate. You can consider these as a way to see how you would fare in the GMAT. Just like you compare GRE and GMAT scores, you can do a percentile comparison as well. The score percentiles compare your performance in the test as compared to the rest of test takers. For example, if your percentile score is 68, that indicates you’ve performed better than 68 % of other test takers. Knowing this is as important as comparing the scores, as this will help you factor your competition.
We hope this blog helps. An exact conversion of GRE to GMAT scores is not possible. However, you can do a comparison and find out how you will perform in GMAT using the GRE scores. No matter which exam you are going to take, only practice and hard work can help you get good scores.
